The Office of Research Ethics (ORE)
The ORE acts as a conduit between the researcher and the research ethics committees. Our small team provides administrative support to the REC and the sub-committees to ensure that the review and approvals system are delivered efficiently.
The ORE, in consultation with the REC and its committees, develops and implements policies and procedures in compliance with national and international guidelines
In addition we provide the following support services:
- assistance with the development of a research ethics submissions;
- information and guidance relating to ethics issues;
- one-to-one consultations at pre-submission stage;
- presentations and workshops on research ethics and related area.
All research conducted within UCD or by UCD staff or students that involve humans or animals requires the individual researcher, and/or teams of researchers, to obtain an ethics review and approval. Research should be conducted in line with an approved research ethics application and should adhere to the conditions of that approval.
USA: Federalwide Assurance (FWA)
The UCD Human Research Ethics Committees (HREC Sciences & Humanities) are registered with the (opens in a new window)Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as follows:

The OHRP provide approval for human subjects research conducted or supported by the HHS for international (non U.S) institutions and also provide approval for Federalwide Assurance (FWA). The FWA is an assurance of compliance with the U.S federal regulations for the protection of human subjects in research. The UCD HREC submission for Federalwide Assurance has also been approved and is currently (opens in a new window)active until June 2028.
